Application The specification defines a set of TIFF tags to describe all geographic information associated with TIFF imagery that originates from satellite imagery systems, scanned aerial photography, scanned maps, digital elevation models, or as a result of geographic analyses. GeoTIFF is commonly used for satellite imagery, scanned aerial photography, scanned maps, digital elevation models, or as a result of geographic analyses.
Implementation benefits GeoTIFF uses a small set of reserved TIFF tags to store a broad range of georeferenced information, catering to geographic as well as projected coordinate system needs.Projections include UTM, US State Plane and National Grids, as well as the underlying projection types, such as Transverse Mercator and Lambert Conformal Conic. GeoTIFF relies on the EPSG Geodetic Parameter Dataset (maintained by OGP) for the identification and definition of coordinate system.
